I’ve been up in the loft lately having a sort out. We moved to this house about 3½ years ago and there are still boxes in the loft waiting to be sorted through.
Its cold, dusty and claustrophobic up there but I love delving into boxes of bits that I had forgotten about.
And here is the contents of one box which I had forgotten about. Plus theres another one like it still up there. They are box frames, mostly from Ikea and mostly all still in their wrapping! The triangular and house shape ones (and there are loads of them) were in a sale at Habitat – several years ago now! They’re made of a tightly packed type of polysterene. They measure about 6” high x 6” wide and there are two blocks of clear acrylic in the centre square which slide out so you can put your photograph in between them.

Surely I’m not the only person who buys and hoards like this? The only thing is, you can bet your life that if I did create something and needed a box frame to mount it I would go out and buy one, totally forgetting that I had this lot :)

I thought I would have a go at decorating one of them. This was done late at night – well, late for me anyway – always a mistake.
I used polymer medium to cover it with tissue paper, then painted over with white acrylic paint.
I then built up layers of Golden fluid acrylics starting with Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold, followed by Quin. Burnt Orange, Quin.Crimson then Michael deMengs’ favourite colour ‘UZZH’ (Not sure I've spelt that correctly). Just take a look at his blog - fantastic!

The studs are upholstery studs and the piece in the centre is just a piece of old lace painted with acrylics and rubbed with yes, you’ve guessed it, Treasure Gold.
I also rubbed it on the outside of the frame.
I’ve shown two photos as neither of them really show the wonderful colour that it truly is. These photos were taken at 5.30 p.m on a dull day with the light fading fast.
In both of them the lace looks very dull but in reality it shines especially around the edges where the Treasure Gold was rubbed.
And finally…
This is a piece of fabric I created recently. Now correct me if I’m wrong, but is that the face of a man looking down, that has appeared on the lefthand side of my fabric???
Sorry Carol :)

Great box! You should call the face in the fabric someone famous and then you could sell it on E-bay for millions like the Virgin Mary in toast. How did you get the personal message under leave your comment? I like that.

Hi Lynda
What a great stash ! I love what you've done with the Pyramid frame, very evocative!!
As for the man's face in the fabric, that's really spooky.
That happened to me one time when i was doing a technique where you throw powder paint onto paper and then play the hose on it, when it was dry a woman's face apperaed, so i enhanced it and embroidered it and it's always been a favourite of mine, because it felt like a gift.

Definitely a face there, spooky or what??

Love the effect you got on the pyramid. Are you going to do anything with the house shaped one?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who stores stuff away for later and then forgets it! Great frame and yes, I see the face too! Funny how that happens sometimes.

Me too. I buy and hoard. I have a huge hoard of frames bought in sales or from cheapy shops with pictures in which I take out. I paint or spray them to fit my pieces - the only problem is - I haven't framed anything for a long time - creating hangings or proud mounting onto covered board. So I have this hoard of frames taking up space!!! I do the same with picture frame moulding to make my own frames. I have a stash of that too. Added 3 lengths to it last week but using the fancy moulding to make soluble paper moulds. Impulse buy.
What are you going to do with the 'spooky' man??

I can see him too! Think you ought to name him.

Oh that is so good! There's another technique crying out to be tried. Fabric man is wonderful-is it as obvious on the fabric as in the photo?

I see the man. The frame certainly turned out well. I too buy things(and lose them) that I might need, usually at thrift stores.

Great post Lynda - the pyramid frame is brilliant - so rich and textural looking. Can definitely see the face...

We don't have a loft, we keep all our surplus under the house. I wish I could find a stash like you've found. I love what you've made, Michael would be impressed.
