More memories

Searching through a box of bits and pieces, I came across this...

...the front and back of a page torn from a magazine though goodness knows which one.
These are the pictures that started me off on my City & Guilds Machine Knitting and Design course which in turn led me to Creative Embroidery.
It was these two outfits in particular that inspired me. I kept this page for sentimental reasons :)
Does anyone else recall exactly what (or whom) inspired you?
This was the piece of fabric I created at the weekend using Gossamer Fuse.
I decided to start work on it this evening.
I cut it into three pieces using the soldering iron. Laid the middle section on top of the other two pieces and once again used the soldering iron to burn a hole through both pieces which I then connected with a triple French knot** using a viscose tape.

I also sliced a piece out of the side with the soldering iron and rejoined it using gold coloured stainless steel wire.
Will blog again about this piece once I have worked on it further.

** triple French Knot - I probably just made that up, I shouldn't think there is such a thing *LOL* What I have done is wound the tape around the needle three times before inserting it back in the hole.

It was the C&G Machine Knitting that also set me on the creative stitching track. I saw what all the others were doing and it just rubbed off.

Great pictures. It's fun to see the styles we were influenced by. The fusible looks like it does what you want. Sandy

The Gossamer fuse piece looks fantastic Lynd and I love triple French knots--double French knots-single French knots any French knots to tell the truth.

Love what you did to the piece, just don't mention French Knots to Jennt LOL
I think it was watching Jan Beaneys 'Embroidery' series on BBC1 in the early 80's that set my imagination running, it featured Jean Littlejohn, Julia Capara, Jean Draper, Constance Howard, and a very young Pauline Burbridge, and many more, Dianne Springer published a book of the series with the projects Jan made. but it was almost ten years later before I was able to venture into actually doing embroidery
bet your sorry you asked :)

It was coming across a City and Guilds exhibition run by Val Campbell-Harding that really started me(though I'd always had an interest). I begged her to take me on already full course and went from there.

Can't think of any one person who inspired me as I cannot remember a time when I was not sewing/embroidering/knitting/crocheting right from being a small child - I just loved it then and am obsessed with it now - as you will have gathered by now.
I think I am influenced most now as I see and meet more and more textile artists and their work.

Loving this piece especially the colours and where would we be without our trusty soldering irons?? one of the best tools around.

I am also busy with fabric from when I was a child, made a lot of cloths for Barbie:-) when I was about nine, did a lot of crocheting when I was 10 and followed my first sewing classes when I was 14; the only child in a class of older women who where about fourty or fifty. I don't remember what inspired me the most, it was always there , maybe in our DNA?
I do know what inspires me now, guess what...:-) I think Carol has a point; bet you're sorry you asked..

Hi Lynda
I remember these pics too, especially the hats in the small pic on the L of the second pic. It wasn't Pins and Needles was it, I used to love that, and got published in it several times. Happy days!
It was my next door neighbour who got me started on the sewing thing when i was about 13, and i've never stopped for long since. I shall always remember how excited i was when she let me use her E/L sewing machine, it could do embroidery if you put the right cog in!!!
Love the way your going with the new piece, it has the look of old leather. What's Viscose tape? Have I missed something?
Many thanks for your comment on my CG post.

The photos bring back so many memories, the beauty is you could wear those outfits today and they wouldn't be out of place.

My mother is the one who was always being creative. She knitted, made clothes, etc... She did almost anything with fabric and thread. I guess that is where it came from. And when I was about 12 years old I started drawing lessons and became active on that part too. Later on, when I was about 18 years old I went to attend some sewing classes. I went six times and decided it wasn't much fun, because I was the youngest and had other interests. And now I just started to make fiber art. At this point I try a lot and read a lot. And that is how I ended up here :-). And I must say that I like it a lot. You make such nice things, with interesting colours en texture. I drop by so now and then to see what you made. Keep on the good work!
