Rust Dyeing

The challenge for this month on Fibre Art Friends is rust dyeing and the results that some of the members have achieved are fantastic so I thought I would have a go.
My results are nothing special for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I couldn’t really find anything decorative that was sufficiently rusty to wrap the fabric around and secondly, I am far too impatient – I only left these pieces for one day!

Once the fabrics had dried out I rinsed them in soapy water to get rid of the smell of vinegar. I was amazed that the rust colour did not wash out. The silk pieces seemed to take the rust far better than the cotton.
This one is silk chiffon,

and this one is silk noil.

I wrapped two coloured pieces of fabric around a rusty metal bar to see what would happen. The black piece is cotton and the blue piece, which is actually darker than in the photograph, also cotton, had previously been dyed with procion dyes.

I followed a link on Françoise’s blog to this website, Rust Tex and have purchased the CD which should arrive any day now, in the hope that I too will get some truly stunning results.

For some really good rust dyeing experiments from the Fibre Art Friends group, take a look at these blogs:

I'll be anxious to hear your review of your Rust Tex CD. Interesting how the rust shows up on the black.

Your rusted fabrics look great - I have been reading about the process a bit lately and will have to try it - perhaps with all those peieces of metal I have been rusting for collages! The Zine looks great (congratulations) - I subscribed as soon as I heard about it. Pity Sept seems so far away... Debbi B

Congratulations on your upcoming eZine. I can hardly wait.
Also, would you email me about your Fiber Friends Group. kroushl@insightbb.com

Thank you muchly for reminding me that the cloth doesn't have to be white for me to dye it with rust...it seems obvious now I see it, and that dark piece of yours is lovely, but I hadn't actually *done* it. I'm having a dye week, so this will be one of the things I do. Thanks again!
