Felt Melt

The Textile Challenge Yahoo Group run by ‘Postcards and Stuff’ Carol recently had a Felt Melt Challenge.
I did not have time to try anything new for this so thought I would show some felt melt samples I made some time ago now.

This vessel is made with a piece of pelmet Vilene sandwiched between two layers of acrylic felt. The felt was bonded onto the Vilene using Bondaweb then marks were burnt into the surface using a soldering iron
Metal Effects Iron Metallic Paint was applied to the felt surface and when dry a coat of Metal Effects Patina Ageing Solution in rust was painted over the top. This gives the piece the effect of rust. I wanted this vessel to look as if it had just been dug up from somewhere!
The cord used to join the edges is paper string which had also been painted with the Metal Effects products.

These are close ups of the vessel. The colours of course are nothing like the real thing - I just love the way they look!

This next image is made from two layers of felt which has had gold tissue paper scrunched then bonded on top with Bondaweb. Shapes were then burnt through the top layer only with a soldering iron.

This piece is Kunin felt. This was just a sample to see what happened. I stitched a square grid all over then attached some other shapes, using Maori female facial tattoos as inspiration, which had been very heavily machine stitched. I then used the heat gun to melt the felt background. The photo below is a close up of the melted grid.

The last sample is a piece of acrylic felt with a layer of organza bonded on the top. Marks were scored with a soldering iron then Treasure Gold was rubbed very heavily over the surface.

Wow that top piece really does look like it's just been dug up from somewhere. Lots of great samples here. And you've got some lovely goodies in your previous post.

have just come from the textile challenge site to here, so you can ignore the how question in my message there. these are fantastic samples and the vessel is brilliant. love the surface texture, does it need a new home at all, I think it would look just fine in my house!
