T.A.S.T. - Chevron Stitch

Instead of the usual fabric strips on fabric, I chose to work my samples using paper on paper for this weeks T.A.S.T. Challenge – Chevron Stitch.

The paper ‘thread’ I have used for all the samples is one I bought from a mill shop several years ago. Evidently it is/was used to make paper knickers! The composition is very much like nappy liners and I’m wondering why I haven’t used it before to experiment with.

My first sample is worked on recycled cotton rag paper.

The stitches were rubbed over with a green metallic Markal paintstick. I had to rub very lightly as too much pressure tended to pull the stitches out. A wash of deep red drawing ink over the top...

...and finally finished with a layer of acrylic wax.

I had used a paper towel to mop the excess ink off, liked how it came out...

...so did the same with a sheet of watercolour paper.

This sample is handmade paper pulp backed with scrim.

Small amounts of Procion MX dye in Magenta, Golden Yellow and Indigo Blue were mixed up to use as paint. I’m going to work this one further and will post the results later.

The final sample is on a background of watercolour paper and the Chevron stitch is used to couch down a strip of paper string.

The whole piece was flooded with deep red drawing ink and black writing ink.

Then out came the bleach!

Finally, I finished off with a rub over of Copper Treasure Gold. This is, of course, my favourite sample.

Your paper thread sounds really interesting. Great experiments, especially when you get a print off the original piece too! Love all the dyes and colours you use on your pieces :)

I just love it when you experiment. You have such interesting ideas and they always seem to turn out so lovely. Wow is all I can say about all these samples.

I love the way you take one thing and manipulate it again and again. Love that magenta, yellow, blue piece.

Maybe some iron on interfacing on the back would help to secure the stitches so they don't pull on the paper when you're adding to the pieces?

I like the way you think Lynda--I have been given some handmade paper A4 size (about 500 sheets to be exact) and I had been thinking of using it for my next sample until this morning when I saw what the stitch is and changed my mind now..
I think I'll leave it for a while now after seeing yours.
Well done you are very talented.
